Organisation d'un chapitre Le cours permet à l'élève de reprendre seul le travail effectué en classe avec le professeur. L'essentiel à mémoriser est constitué de définitions, propriétés, méthodes, tableaux récapitulatifs. Des activités présentent :
- soit l'introduction d'une notion ;
- soit une démarche pour démontrer une propriété ou un problème ;

The book presents applications of semi-Markov processes in finance, insurance and reliability, using real-life problems as examples. After a presentation of the main probabilistic tools necessary for understanding of the book, the authors show how to apply semi-Markov processes in finance, starting from the axiomatic definition and continuing eventually to the most advanced financial tools.

[content title="Description"]A modern approach to mathematical modeling, featuring unique applications from the field of mechanics

An Introduction to Mathematical Modeling: A Course in Mechanics is designed to survey the mathematical models that form the foundations of modern science and incorporates examples that illustrate how the most successful models arise from basic principles in modern and classical mathematical physics. Written by a world authority on mathematical theory and computational mechanics, the book presents an account of continuum mechanics, electromagnetic field theory, quantum mechanics, and statistical mechanics for readers with varied backgrounds in engineering, computer science, mathematics, and physics.

The author streamlines a comprehensive understanding of the topic in three clearly organized sections:

Nonlinear Continuum Mechanics introduces kinematics as well as force and stress in deformable bodies; mass and momentum; balance of linear and angular momentum; conservation of energy; and constitutive equations [/content]

[content title="Description"]In mathematics and mathematical physics, potential theory is the study of harmonic functions.

The term "potential theory" was coined in 19th-century physics when it was realized that two fundamental forces of nature known at the time, namely gravity and the electrostatic force, could be modeled using functions called the gravitational potential and electrostatic potential, both of which satisfy Poisson's equation—or in the vacuum, Laplace's equation. [content title="Description"]'Phylogenetics' is the reconstruction and analysis of phylogenetic (evolutionary) trees and networks based on inherited characteristics. It is a flourishing area of intereaction between mathematics, statistics, computer science and biology. The main role of phylogenetic techniques lies in evolutionary biology, where it is used to infer historical relationships between species. However, the methods are also relevant to a diverse range of fields including epidemiology, ecology, medicine, as well as linguistics and cognitive psychology This book is intended for biologists interested in the mathematical theory behind phylogenetic methods, and for mathematicians, statisticians, and computer scientists eager to learn about this emerging area of discrete mathematics. 'Phylogenetics' in the 24th volume in the Oxford Lecture Series in Mathematics and its Applications. This series contains short books suitable for graduate students and researchers who want a well-written account of mathematics that is fundamental to current to research. The series emphasises future directions of research and focuses on genuine applications of mathematics to finance, engineering and the physical and biological sciences. [/content]

[content title="Description"]This research monograph concerns the Nevanlinna factorization of analytic functions smooth, in a sense, up to the boundary. The peculiar properties of such a factorization are investigated for the most common classes of Lipschitz-like analytic functions. The book sets out to create a satisfactory factorization theory as exists for Hardy classes. The reader will find, among other things, the theorem on smoothness for the outer part of a function, the generalization of the theorem of V.P. Havin and F.A. Shamoyan also known in the mathematical lore as the unpublished Carleson-Jacobs theorem, the complete description of the zero-set of analytic functions continuous up to the boundary, generalizing the classical Carleson-Beurling theorem, and the structure of closed ideals in the new wide range of Banach algebras of analytic functions. The first three chapters assume the reader has taken a standard course on one complex variable; the fourth chapter requires supplementary papers cited there. The monograph addresses both final year students and doctoral students beginning to work in this area, and researchers who will find here new results, proofs and methods. [/content]

[content title="Description"]Optimal Design of Experiments offers a rare blend of linear algebra, convex analysis, and statistics. The optimal design for statistical experiments is first formulated as a concave matrix optimization problem. Using tools from convex analysis, the problem is solved generally for a wide class of optimality criteria such as D-, A-, or E-optimality. The book then offers a complementary approach that calls for the study of the symmetry properties of the design problem, exploiting such notions as matrix majorization and the Kiefer matrix ordering. The results are illustrated with optimal designs for polynomial fit models, Bayes designs, balanced incomplete block designs, exchangeable designs on the cube, rotatable designs on the sphere, and many other examples.
Since the book’s initial publication in 1993, readers have used its methods to derive optimal designs on the circle, optimal mixture designs, and optimal designs in other statistical models. Using local linearization techniques, the methods described in the book prove useful even for nonlinear cases, in identifying practical designs of experiments.

Audience This book is indispensable for anyone involved in planning statistical experiments, including mathematical statisticians, applied statisticians, and mathematicians interested in matrix optimization problems. [/content]
