La douleur court comme un fil rouge, du début à la fin de la vie et de l'œuvre freudienne, aussi bien dans ses aspects physiques que psychiques. Cependant, les disciples de Freud et les analystes contemporains n'ont pas manifesté le même intérêt pour elle, et la médecine moderne la confie de plus en plus à des consultations ou centres spécialisés. Pourtant, comme Freud le pensait, la douleur physique peut être un symptôme psychique au même titre que l'angoisse, la dépression ou les obsessions.
Penser la douleur et essayer de mieux saisir son énigme, c'est faire avancer la compréhension du psychisme humain, en particulier dans son aspect traumatique. Tel est l'objectif de ce livre. Une première partie analyse la douleur dans la vie et dans l'œuvre de Freud. La seconde partie, vouée à la clinique, étudie des catégories nosographiques sous l'angle exclusif de la douleur hystérie, hypocondrie, névrose traumatique dans lesquelles Freud a reconnu une origine psychogénique de la douleur.
Enfin, l'auteur consacre une troisième partie à la théorie et à la pratique de la prise en charge psychothérapique de la douleur quelle que soit son origine (psychique ou somatique). Il introduit la notion de " névrose algique " et étudie les différentes fonctions de la douleur et les remaniements qu'elle impose au Moi pour détailler ensuite les caractéristiques du fonctionnement mental des douloureux chroniques.
De nombreux cas cliniques illustrent ce livre, relevés principalement au sein d'une consultation hospitalière créé par l'auteur à l'hôpital neurologique de Lyon et animée uniquement par des psychanalystes.

Demain (April 26, 1927 – April 3, 2020) was an American microbiologist.[1][2] During a 60-year career, he gained a reputation in the field of industrial microbiology. He was the Professor of Industrial Microbiology in the Biology Department at MIT and Founder and Head of Department of Fermentation Microbiology at Merck & Co. The August 2010 edition of The Journal of Antibiotics celebrated his scientific career.[3] Demain was described as "one of the world's leading industrial microbiologists" and as "a scientist constantly in the forefront of industrial microbiology and biotechnology." He was "a pioneer in research on the elucidation and regulation of the biosynthetic pathways leading to the penicillins and cephalosporins" and "instrumental in the development of the beta-lactam industry". One feature of Demain's work, according to Microbiology Australia, was his "ability to undertake fundamental research on systems with clear industrial applications, recognising that biodiscovery is the start of the road that includes strain improvement to achieve levels of product synthesis that warrant further investment to take products into the marketplace."[4][5]

Demain published over 500 papers, co-edited or co-authored fourteen books, and took out 21 U.S. patents. [/content]

[content title="Description"]This monograph presents mathematical theory of statistical models described by the essentially large number of unknown parameters, comparable with sample size but can also be much larger. In this meaning, the proposed theory can be called "essentially multiparametric". It is developed on the basis of the Kolmogorov asymptotic approach in which sample size increases along with the number of unknown parameters. This theory opens a way for solution of central problems of multivariate statistics, which up until now have not been solved. Traditional statistical methods based on the idea of an infinite sampling often break down in the solution of real problems, and, dependent on data, can be inefficient, unstable and even not applicable. In this situation, practical statisticians are forced to use various heuristic methods in the hope the will find a satisfactory solution. Mathematical theory developed in this book presents a regular technique for implementing new, more efficient versions of statistical procedures. Near exact solutions are constructed for a number of concrete multi-dimensional problems: estimation of expectation vectors, regression and discriminant analysis, and for the solution to large systems of empiric linear algebraic equations. It is remarkable that these solutions prove to be not only non-degenerating and always stable, but also near exact within a wide class of populations. In the conventional situation of small dimension and large sample size these new solutions far surpass the classical, commonly used consistent ones. It can be expected in the near future, for the most part, traditional multivariate statistical software will be replaced by the always reliable and more efficient versions of statistical procedures implemented by the technology described in this book. This monograph will be of interest to a variety of specialists working with the theory of statistical methods and its applications. Mathematicians would find new classes of urgent problems to be solved in their own regions. Specialists in applied statistics creating statistical packages will be interested in more efficient methods proposed in the book. Advantages of these methods are obvious: the user is liberated from the permanent uncertainty of possible instability and inefficiency and gets algorithms with unimprovable accuracy and guaranteed for a wide class of distributions.
