Summary

Microbial Biotechnology: An Interdisciplinary Approach, edited by Pratyoosh Shukla and published by CRC Press in 2017, is a comprehensive volume that explores the vast and interconnected landscape of modern microbial biotechnology[reference:0][reference:1]. This text brings to the forefront the dynamic fields of functional foods and microbial bioremediation, showcasing how microorganisms are being harnessed to address some of the most pressing challenges in human health and environmental sustainability[reference:2].

The book is structured to guide readers through the interdisciplinary nature of biotechnology, presenting innovative ideas and groundbreaking findings across a diverse range of topics[reference:3]. It begins by exploring the fundamental building blocks of the field, such as bacterial exopolysaccharides and their future prospects[reference:4]. It then delves into applied areas, including the use of bioremediation as a novel green technology to clean up highly contaminated sites[reference:5], and the development of probiotics to improve human health[reference:6].

A significant portion of the text is dedicated to the industrial applications of microorganisms. Chapters cover thermostable enzymes and their uses[reference:7], microbial enzymes for the pulp and paper industry[reference:8], and the optimization of wastewater treatment plants using evolutionary algorithms[reference:9]. The book also addresses cutting-edge topics such as the production of fructooligosaccharides for probiotic applications[reference:10] and the use of rhizobacteria in managing plant abiotic stresses[reference:11].

Beyond these core areas, the book ventures into the intersection of biotechnology with other disciplines. It includes a chapter on the applications of ophthalmic optical coherence tomography (OCT) in medical biotechnology, highlighting the convergence of engineering, medicine, and microbiology[reference:12]. Each chapter is written by experts in their respective fields, providing readers with authoritative and up-to-date information.

Targeted at researchers, senior undergraduate and graduate students, and professionals in modern biotechnology, this book serves as a crucial resource for those working in interdisciplinary areas[reference:13][reference:14]. Its clear and straightforward descriptions cater to a wide audience, making complex topics accessible[reference:15]. By covering a unique and diverse range of topics, from microalgal proteomics to microbial community analysis in wastewater treatment, this text provides a much-needed new resource for the scientific community[reference:16][reference:17].
